I know a kid's first birthday party is a big deal (witness the homemade Cheerio cake I made for Mini Me on her first birthday), but

When I lived in Honolulu, a first birthday luau was/is common. And $3000 would have been VERY modest. A lot of it had to do w/the infant mortality rate way back, when the missionaries and their ilk brought diseases to the islands. For a child to make it to a year old was a joyous event to be celebrated and shared w/family and friends.

I am thinking back...I can honestly say that I have never spent over $100 for any birthday party...usually it was $20-30 and I know my kids always felt loved and special. Boy, wonder what the lil guy will "expect" when he's old enough to want...

I will admit to having spent $400 on a bowling party when Mini Me turned 6. Of course, I was still actively debting at the time, but that's no excuse. I plan on never making that mistake again....
