Who's right?

March 2nd, 2008 at 03:15 am

My husband recently gave up his parking spot and started riding public transportation to work as much as possible. After purchasing an Eco pass for the train and bus, we're still saving $50 in parking fees. However, some of that money may end up going toward parking anyways on days he needs his car and has to drive.

In his mind, he should be getting that $50 in cash to do whatever he wants with if he doesn't spend it on parking since he says he's the one making the sacrifice. (Oh, cry me a river. It's so tough to sit on the train and IM people and read the paper....)

In my mind, that $50 should sit in our checking account and he should use his debit card to pay for parking when he can't take public transportation. We'll then have a receipt for tax purposes; plus if any of that $50 is left at the end of the month, it will just remain in the checking account as a cushion for months when money is tight.

We're not fighting over this. However, one of us IS pouting, so I thought I'd put it out there to see what all of you think.

Your thoughts?

I think I like the idea of a cushion, but maybe for the sake of marital harmony, you could split the difference?

Negotiate for a month to month split. After the first month, split what was left over. That way he sees that the months that he pays for driving affects how much of the 50% he gets?

Does he get any other sort of allowance? If not, give him the $50 for parking and the remainder is his to spend.

I agree with you! sorry hubby!

I agree with you. But maybe a compromise is in order. Give him $10.00 of spending money, put the $40.00 towards parking transportation as needed and the leftover at the end of the month will be your cushion.

We both have expense accounts that average more than $300 of spending money every two months, so that $50 would be in addition to that.

Sorry but it sounds like you were the one who mainly got the family into debt, so let him have the fifty and be glad he hasn't left you.

Uh, no, I think my husband helped accumulate that debt. He's the one with the outrageous student loans for his son. My debt is only half that debt. And he's lucky I didn't divorce him lonig ago given the crap we went through with his son and ex-wife.... (P.S. Really hope you're not married, ANON....)
