Baking soda, vinegar, water and a freebie worth mentioning

March 21st, 2008 at 01:16 am

My mother sent me on an errand this afternoon. She wanted two cases of bottled water from Costco, but can't lift them so she asked me to get them and deliver them to her house when I return her dog, "Spud," who is staying with me while she jets off to Vegas this evening to gamble away our inheritance. ("Our" as in me and the dog's. And let's not get into the whole bottled water discussion. My mother is nearing 80 and isn't about ready to change her ways.... )

Being the good daughter that I am -- and in need of vinegar and baking soda for a massive project I'm tackling -- I went off to Costco for her.

While I was wrestling with the water, a guy was cleaning up his table where he had been giving out samples of liquid Tide. Apparently, he didn't want to pack up the samples because as I staggered by clutching my back he threw about 10 of the samples in my cart. Anyone who has priced Tide lately knows these little babies are the equivalent of liquid gold!

Back to that massive project I mentioned... I was inspired by the freaky mom at

this site to do some spring cleaning. Of course, I'm a week behind her detailed "to do" list but I did spend an hour cleaning my refrigerator out today. (Exciting stuff, I know....)

I've never cleaned with baking soda and vinegar before, but I decided to give it a go. So far, I've only done the baking soda bit, but it worked wonders.

One would think all of this would be a moot point since I've got

Hazel the Housekeeper covering my back, but alas I have decided that when I quit my job in May I will also let Hazel go -- unless I pick up a few more clients between now and then for the booming side business.

I haven't discussed the letting go of Hazel with my husband yet. It'll be interesting to see what his response will be when I hand him a mop and tell him to clean his own d*^# bathroom. ....

http://thehomespunheart.blogspot.com/. It is very realistic. She doesn't have time to iron the shower curtain, she is cleaning around 3 kids, one of who is a newborn! Smile

Boomeyers, I just sent that link to YD. Women like that just put me in awe and Krninco, I linked from your site to another site where a woman knitted Easter Eggs! Bookmarked that too! This is why I don't do these things because I'm too busy reading blogs of women who do!

I've got both of those sites bookmarked as well. Those women scare me. I guess I'm just not that domesticated. Even my husband was in awe when he saw the fridge last night. He said "What got into you????"

I love cleaning with baking soda and vinegar. It cleans even better than commercial cleaners. The natural stuff also does not have the awful odors the store bought stuff does.

I'm trying to come up with an odor-free cleaning system for when I have to start cleaning my house entirely by myself again since the fumes of commercial cleansers irritate my asthma. Baking soda and vinegar seem to be the answer.

Wow, thanks for the link (I think)? Never been called freaky before, but I will take it Smile I did the spring cleaning sheets because people requested them on our site and I was trying to put together a reference book that would help a new homemaker manage their home, if they wanted it. Not to say that everyone has to do it like that, just tips and pointers.

As for the ironing the shower curtain, I actually threw it in the wash and it turned into a teeny tiny ball and I was forced to iron it. I was trying to do the lazy thing and wash it instead of ironing it, but it didn't work out in my favor.

Glad you got a clean fridge though- great job!

Amy, I have to just turn the steamy shower on to get my shower curtain's wrinkles out after washing it.

Honestly, it was made from really cheap material and it was a teeny tiny ball when I took it out. I would have done that in any normal circumstance, but it got wrapped up in other laundry in the dryer. Lesson learned! If you look at the printables, I promise that there are no instructions for ironing a shower curtain. This is the first and last time I would ever do that Smile

    Amy,
Seriously, the spring cleaning sheets have been a godsend. I am religiously following them. The first thing I do each morning is print them out. Yesterday, I actually bought a new shower curtain and cleaned out my makeup drawer and medicine box (yeah, I'm a little slow and am about a week behind you.) Keep it up.
